No red with Var for Kanté handball pic skysports Daniel Podence's early strike was ruled out for offside after a VAR review (would have been given if it was for Chelsea)
Covid-19-hit Chelsea slipped further behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League title race as they were held to a goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The visitors had a request for the fixture to be postponed because of a coronavirus outbreak rejected on Sunday morning - with manager Thomas Tuchel saying they were "a bit angry" with the decision. Consequently, the Blues named just four outfield players on the bench at Molineux. The first XI was still strong enough to be competitive but they struggled to create as they were held to a second successive draw. Daniel Podence had an early goal ruled out for offside as Wolves enjoyed the better of the opening period but in foggy conditions chances were few and far between. Leander Dendoncker's header just before half-time was comfortably saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, while Wolves counterpart Jose Sa did well to deny Christian Pulisic from close range late on. The result, coupled with a 4-0 win for Manchester City against Newcastle on Sunday, means Chelsea are six points adrift of Pep Guardiola's side.
Chelsea boss Tuchel had argued pre-match that this game should not have gone ahead - and the quality of football on show would certainly have justified that decision - after revealing that his side were without several players because of positive Covid-19 tests. Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Kai Havertz and the injured Andreas Christensen were all absent from the squad, and Tuchel was unwilling to include under-23 players because they train in a separate bubble. Six of the weekend's 10 Premier League fixtures had already been postponed because of Covid-19 outbreaks within clubs so Tuchel arguably had good reason to feel aggrieved, especially as his side laboured to a result that does little to help their title ambitions. While the coronavirus situation will not have helped, Tuchel was still able to name a decent side which should have offered more than the lacklustre performance they produced. Having failed to manage a shot on target in a drab first half, they did have one golden chance to take all three points late on when Pulisic got in behind the defence but he was denied by Sa at close range. Wolves, the lowest scorers in the Premier League at home, struggled to trouble Mendy but the result was more damaging for Chelsea, who have now won just one of their past four league games.

LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Wolves do not score many, but they don't concede many either. They will make life difficult for Chelsea, just as they have against Liverpool and Manchester City in the past few weeks. But both of those sides still took three points against Wolves, and I think Chelsea will do the same despite their wobble in the past few weeks. Even if they don't play well, Thomas Tuchel usually still finds a way to win. They are still right in the mix in the title race too, and things will click again for them soon, I am sure of it.
Prediction: 0-2
Wolves winger Adama Traore has failed to score or provide an assist in his past 19 Premier League matches

Raheem Sterling converted a controversial penalty to reach 100 Premier League goals and give Manchester City victory in a one-sided contest with 10-man Wolves. Sterling kept his cool to roll his 66th-minute spot-kick past Jose Sa after a lengthy VAR check ruled Joao Moutinho had illegally blocked Bernardo Silva's cross, even though it seemed to hit the Wolves midfielder on his armpit. We 'can be more aggressive' in the final third - Bruno Lage
Toothless Wolves face up to tough run Wolves' hopes of mounting a serious challenge for a Champions League spot have grown after a similarly slow start to the season. They had won five of their previous seven games and another victory would have moved them to within a point of fourth-placed West Ham. But, just when they needed to assert themselves with urgency after the break, they fell away. They rarely threatened Norwich in attack and their pressing game out of possession seemed to run short of steam. The visitors were limited to occasional raids forward on the counter, with their best opening coming courtesy of Norwich defender Grant Hanley's undercooked backpass to goalkeeper Tim Krul. They have another eight games over the next 37 days, including meetings with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea before Christmas. Their failure to pick up maximum points in East Anglia might be most keenly felt in the midst of that hectic, high-profile run..

Raul Jimenez says he "knew from the first moment" he would recover from a "difficult part of his life" after scoring the only goal in Wolves' win over West Ham on Saturday. Striker Jimenez, who spent eight months on the sidelines after fracturing his skull in a league game at Arsenal last season, swept Daniel Podence's cut-back into the corner from the edge of the box to lift Bruno Lage's side up to sixth in the table - and end the Hammers' four-game winning run in the Premier League. "I knew I'd be back, and I'm here," said the 30-year-old. "I'm enjoying what I'm doing with the team and the club. I'm really happy to be back."

It's a hard place to come but during the 90 minutes I was disappointed with the performance. It's a moment to learn. We played against a strong team. We are playing well but that is not enough. Max Kilman's first Wolves goal and Raul Jimenez's 50th were enough to send Bruno Lage's men into seventh place in the Premier League and condemn Everton to a third successive defeat.
Wolves dominated the opening period of an entertaining contest and were worthy of a comfortable half-time cushion provided by Kilman's far-post header and a lovely clipped finish by Jimenez. However, after being booed off at the break, Rafael Benitez's visitors were much improved when they returned. Alex Iwobi halved the deficit and it took a fabulous save by Jose Sa to deny substitute Anthony Gordon four minutes from time. Wolves managed to avoid conceding an injury-time equaliser as they did at Leeds nine days ago to take their points tally to 13 from five games. For Everton, their second-half improvement was scant consolation as early-season optimism continues to fade for a team yet again mired in mid-table, having now lost the same number of games as they have won.

Leeds 1-1 Wolves: The penalty Wolves conceded was 'soft' - Bruno Lage
Wolves inserted an option to buy into the loan deal that brought Hwang to Molineux from RB Leipzig at the end of August. Given the forward's impact already, it might be worth triggering it. With the exception of Jimenez, Wolves have found goals hard to come by since they returned to the top flight in 2018 and when the Mexican suffered a fractured skull in November that ruled him out for the rest of last season, the failing almost landed them in trouble. There was nothing pretty about Hwang's latest effort. Fast reactions meant he was able to get a shot off after Jimenez's effort hit him.

Hwang Hee-chan scored twice to inspire Wolves to their first home win of the season against beleaguered Newcastle, who remain without a victory this term. The game sparked into life after 20 minutes, when Hwang latched on to Raul Jimenez's through ball before finishing coolly beyond the onrushing Karl Darlow. Jeff Hendrick fired Newcastle level with a long-range drive into the bottom corner - moments after Francisco Trincao had rattled the crossbar for Wolves at the other end. Jose Sa had to be on his toes to deny Allan Saint-Maximin from point-blank range within minutes of the restart, but Hwang's left-footed finish - from another Jimenez pass - restored the home side's lead. Newcastle slip into the bottom three after a seventh league game without a win, while Wolves climb to 11th.

Raul Jimenez scored his first goal since suffering a life-threatening fractured skull as Wolves won at Southampton. The Mexico forward grabbed the only goal of the match when he collected a long ball forward, showed great skill to evade two home defenders and finished calmly past Alex McCarthy. Southampton previously had chances to open the scoring but Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa denied Adam Armstrong, Valentino Livramento and Mohamed Elyounoussi. After Jimenez's goal, his first for Wolves since October 2020, the Saints had a chance for an equaliser but Che Adams' shot was saved and despite late home pressure, Wolves held on for the win.

Tottenham beat Wolves in a shootout to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round after blowing a two-goal lead in normal time.
Goals from Leander Dendoncker and Daniel Podence cancelled out earlier efforts from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane to take the game to penalties. But Ruben Neves, Dendoncker and Conor Coady all missed in the shootout as Bryan Gil's penalty proved decisive for Tottenham.
French midfielder Ndombele broke into the box and turned defender Willy Boly to open the scoring at Molineux, before captain Kane made it 2-0 on 23 minutes for Spurs after being played though by Dele Alli. Belgium midfielder Dendoncker headed in Rayan Ait-Nouri's corner before the break and then set up Podence to equalise. Goalkeeper John Ruddy kept Wolves in the game, denying Kane twice with superb blocks on the line to take the match to spot-kicks. With the scores level at 2-2 in the shootout, Neves blasted over. Italian keeper Pierluigi Gollini, playing only his second game for Spurs, saved from Dendoncker after Gil had converted. Wolves' fate was then sealed when Coady hit the bar.
There was bad news too for the Midlands side when defender Yerson Mosquero was taken off on a stretcher in the fifth minute of his debut. Wolves boss Bruno Lage: "It is hard to lose this game because of the way we prepared. The way we are creating chances and the way we are playing are the positive things from this game. But the way we are conceding chances and goals from the opposition makes me very disappointed.
Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo on Kane: "He has much more to give and it's about the game, improving and growing together. In terms of the squad and preparation we have players who have 65/70 sessions and we have players who have 15 sessions. Until we have been able to balance everything, then it will be the moment when the players will improve. We spent a lot of time preparing [for penalties] because it's not luck. It's having a goalkeeper who has the right info, the players taking the responsibility.

Brentford claimed their first win on the road in the Premier League with a comfortable victory over Wolves at Molineux. The newly-promoted London side, who arrived in the West Midlands with an unbeaten away record, took a first-half lead with a well-struck Ivan Toney penalty. The Bees forward then turned provider to shrug off the challenge of Max Kilman and find strike partner Bryan Mbeumo at the back post for his first top-flight goal. Wolves, who have failed to score in their opening three league defeats at home, did not register a shot on target in the West Midlands sunshine despite having more possession. Adama Traore's physicality and speed was a constant threat, and substitute Hwang Hee-chan impressed again on only his second appearance, but manager Bruno Lage will be concerned by his side's lack of cutting edge. The only negative for Brentford was the loss of Shandon Baptiste for a needless second yellow card, five minutes after his first, after he hauled down Francisco Trincao after losing possession. Thomas Frank's side climb to ninth in the table and face high-flying Liverpool in their next league outing, while Wolves slip to 14th with a trip to Southampton to follow.

Hwang Hee-chan scored 20 minutes after coming off the bench scoring on his debut as Wolves got their first Premier League goals of the season in a victory over Watford. Bruno Lage's side had lost their opening three games 1-0 and after 69 shots without scoring, it took Francisco Sierralta heading into his own net from Marcal's cross to give Wolves the advantage. Hwang then came off the bench and stabbed home the rebound from close range after Marcal's shot had been blocked on the line. Watford's club-record 10-game winning home run in the league - which helped them win promotion from the Championship - comes to an end. Nelson Semedo had Wolves' best chances before the goal but shot straight at keeper Bachmann from Francisco Trincao's through ball - and then slotted wide from Raul Jimenez's backheel.

Third round draw after the Wednesday matches
Report: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58239476
Wolves secured their first win of the season as they beat out-of-form Nottingham Forest to reach the Carabao Cup third round.
Wolves head coach Bruno Lage told BBC WM 95.6: "It was a good game and we did what we planned with the way we want to play. In the end it was the same as against Tottenham, more ball, press high and create chances. We feel confident with the work we are doing and we are happy with the result. Daniel Podence started working with us about one week ago, I spoke him this morning about playing and I said it's like his pre-season and he would play 45 minutes. I gave him more minutes which was good because he scored. This competition is massively important for us."

EFL Cup: Lage not happy at fixture pile-up Simon Stone, BBC Sport https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/wolverhampton-wanderers Wolves boss Bruno Lage has not been in England long but he has quickly begun to understand how congested our fixture schedule is. Wolves play Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, two days after the Premier League defeat by Tottenham. The reason? A clash with a T20 game at Trent Bridge on Wednesday. "It is a strange decision," said Lage. "Why did we play on Sunday? Because Tottenham played on Thursday and they are allowed three days to recover and prepare. "That's not our fault so in the same way, we should play on Wednesday. "But Nottingham Forest don’t have the stadium available. That is not our fault either. "Tottenham get their three days, Forest are allowed to play at home and we are in the middle. No-one pays any attention to us. "I think for my players, the club and also the Wolves fans, in the end, no-one thinks about us. They think about everyone but not us."
