It had to happen, didn't it? Amid all the doom and gloom, the uncertainty, the increasing pressure, Wolves went and won a football match.  Very comfortably, too. Admittedly Fulham had a man sent off, but as witnessed at the weekend, it isn't easy for Wolves against nine men, let alone 10.  That shouldn't detract in the slightest from this confidence-boosting victory. This was, by a country mile, their most impressive performance of the season.  Players were transformed. Kevin McDonald skipped past challenges, Danny Batth and Kortney Hause were commanding.  Dominic Iorfa galloped, gazelle-like, down the right wing with finesse and grace, James Henry and Benik Afobe terrorised the Fulham back line.  Wolves have been hiding for a few weeks, but they finally revealed their true selves again in a decent showing at Craven Cottage.  And it was substitute Ojo who delivered the fireworks in a blistering three-minute spell at the start of the second-half.  He found the corners of Andy Lonergan's goal with wildly different goals - the first was deflected off Adam Le Fondre's head, the second fumbled into his own net by the  oalkeeper.  Then Henry put the icing on the cake with a late third, a superb free kick, which created a scoreline Wolves fans were rubbing their eyes in disbelief at.

Jackett made two changes, handing Nathan Byrne his full debut in place of Rajiv van La Parra and benching Jed Wallace for Le Fondre.   On a cool, crisp evening at picturesque Craven Cottage, scriptwriters were busy penning the script that climaxed with Richard Stearman or Jamie O'Hara scoring a dramatic late winner. A  Hollywood blockbuster you might say, appropriate in O'Hara's case seen as Wolves fans have long dubbed him as such.  Wolves began the game intent more on a gentle love story at the romantic old stadium, that of rekindling the precious loving bond between the team and their long-suffering supporters.  O'Hara, villain of the piece, had his every touch booed, but matters soon switched to whether Wolves could reproduce the form everyone is acutely aware they're capable of.  The signs were there. James Henry sent a 20-yarder not too far over the bar, and then Benik Afobe sent a header into Lonergan's arms from a cute Kevin McDonald chip into the box.  Wolves, playing in blue, were bright, breezy and positive in their play, with Nathan Byrne patrolling the right flank with purpose, ably supported by Dominic Iorfa.  Cairney and Ross McCormack both worked the Wolves box, but their efforts were meat and drink for Martinez, whose kicking was once again suspect.  Le Fondre and Afobe were linking nicely - the former played to the latter who rolled Stearman and fired a shot away, again too easy for Lonergan's ability. McDonald, so visibly buoyed by that new contract of his, went all Zinedine Zidane on Fulham, leaving two players on their backsides with a mazy midfield jaunt. Yes, he's back to his best.  For all Wolves' fairly mild dominance, a goal remained elusive, as it did for so long at Preston on Saturday.  Ryan Fredericks tried to give them a hand, sending a bullet header towards his own goalkeeper, which was pushed to Byrne who shot wide.  Henry tested Lonergan's reflexes further with a bullet from range, again pushed from danger. Then came the moment that took this game to an x-rated 18 only production. Cairney, after a heavy touch, lept in two-footed on Le Fondre, studs-up.  Cue winces from fans of both sides, and an inevitable red card, despite Cairney's remorse.  It was deja vu for Wolves - their third successive league game in which a red has been dished out, and the second in a row for the opposition.  As against Preston, the disadvantaged team continued to threaten Wolves' goal.  Moussa Dembele bustled his way towards the their box, leading Batth on a merry dance, before firing low at goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.  But there was no doubt it was Wolves' half - now they just needed that breakthrough.

There was a surprising character introduction at half time when Ojo replaced Byrne, who had improved as the first period went on.  Wolves began the second half as the better side, intent on turning their superiority, and man advantage, into something tangible.  It was Ojo, such a positive influence at Preston, who engineered it with an assist and a goal in a magical three-minute spell.  First, the Liverpool youngster cut inside on his right foot and, with options, fired a beauty towards the far corner.  It took the slightest of flicks off Le Fondre and past Lonergan for the striker's second goal for the club. The celebrations were wild - and they were repeated just 180 seconds later.  This time Ojo went with his left, drilling low towards the near post, and it slipped excruciatingly through Lonergan in the kind of moment that's usually involved a Wolves goalkeeper this season. Jackett's team endured heavy criticism from supporters for their lack of attacking prowess against 10 men at Deepdale, but in London it was a different story as they took total command.  Chances were few and far between as the game slipped into a sedentary pace, Wolves not troubled at the back and content to knock the ball around midfield.  Then came the third, a moment which turned the mood from joyous to delirious, when Henry found the top-corner with an unsaveable free kick from 19 yards.  It was the Oscar-winning moment to top off a memorable evening for Wolves.

Substitute Sheyi Ojo scored one and made another as Wolves climbed into the top half of the Championship with victory over 10-man Fulham.  The hosts were up against it from the moment  Tom Cairney was dismissed for a two-footed tackle on Adam Le Fondre.  Striker Le Fondre then got the faintest of touches on to Ojo's shot to give Wolves a 56th-minute lead.  On-loan winger  Ojo made it 2-0 with a low left-foot drive before James Henry curled in a 20-yard free-kick.  Wolves' victory was their first in five league and cup games, lifting them to 10th in the table, and was the perfect response to owner Steve Morgan putting the club up for sale on Monday. Fulham went into the game on the back of three wins in four Championship games, including a 4-0 west London derby victory over QPR, but they were on the back foot early on, such was Wolves' tempo. Kenny Jackett's side needed an injury-time equaliser to draw with nine-man Preston on Saturday, but started brightly at Craven Cottage as Benik Afobe and Henry both forced saves out of Andy Lonergan. Nathan Byrne also fired wide from close range before Cairney, who had earlier seen a shot saved by Emiliano Martinez, was sent off after jumping in to a challenge with Le Fondre. Wolves took advantage when Ojo, on a season-long loan from Liverpool, saw his 20-yard shot take the slightest of deflections off Le Fondre. Ojo doubled the lead three minutes later when his low left-foot drive beat Lonergan at his near post, with Henry putting the result beyond doubt after Le Fondre was brought down by Tim Ream.

Kevin McDonald salvaged a point for Wolves against nine-man Preston in a breathtaking encounter at Deepdale.

The hosts, who led through Daniel Johnson's 10th minute opener, played with a man down for the majority of the game after Joe Garner was sent off 20 minutes in for a high foot on returning Wolves captain Danny Batth.  Wolves dominated possession and created several chances in the second half, but took until the 91st minute to equalise when McDonald, a day after finally signing a new contract, curled a 20-yard beauty into the corner.  By this point Preston were down to nine men after Bailey Wright saw red for two bookings. But despite some tremendous late pressure in an electric Deepdale atmosphere, the hosts, inspired by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, survived injury time to claim a point.  It was the least they deserved for showing an incredible amount of effort, but Kenny Jackett will see it as two points lost for the inconsistent visitors, who remain close to the relegation zone in the early-season standings.  Rajiv Van La Parra, who almost left the club a few weeks ago, was a surprise starter on the right as Jackett returned to his tried and trusted 4-2-3-1 formation.  Adam Le Fondre was left on the bench, with Jackett selecting the Dutch winger, Jed Wallace and James Henry in an attacking formation.  Wolves made a positive start with some good early possession but Preston took the lead out of the blue on 10 minutes.  Jamaican midfielder Daniel Johnson tried his luck from 20 yards and the ball took a wicked deflection off Batth on its way into the corner past a helpless Emiliano Martinez.  It was Johnson's fifth goal of the season but one which failed to shake Wolves into life.  Preston, their tails up, pushed forward and Middlesbrough winger Adam Reach, linked with a move to Molineux in recent days but who signed for Preston on the morning of the match, sent another deflected goalwards, with this one bouncing wide.  Garner, last season's top scorer for newly-promoted Preston, then tried his luck from 25 yards and the ball curled fractionally wide.  Wolves were on the back foot but their chances of a rare victory this season were boosted enormously when Garner was sent off 20 minutes in.  A 50/50 challenge with Batth saw Garner catch the Wolves captain high, almost on his throat, with a stray boot. With Batth moving down to head the ball, it was a dangerous move, but didn't look malicious with Garner seemingly watching the ball the whole way.  However after both players received treatment for injuries, referee Trevor Kettle sent Garner - suspended for the midweek League Cup defeat to Bournemouth after being booked five times this season - off, to the dismay of the home fans. Wolves immediately looked to push on and Henry lashed a 25-yarder just over the bar.  Just past the half hour mark they were four on three, but Henry overhit his through ball to Afobe, allowing keeper Jordan Pickford to clear as Wolves again played a poor final pass.  Tom Clarke fired over from a Reach free kick, before Dominic Iorfa was booked for dragging down Greg Cunningham. Tenacious Preston were fighting and scrapping for every loose ball, with John Welsh epitomising their whole-hearted approach in defensive midfield. Afobe, Henry and Van La Parra all found themselves in good attacking positions in and around the Preston box, but failed to find the target or pick out a team mate as Wolves struggled to find that magic moment.  And with Wolves having plenty of possession but failing to match that intensity, it was the home side who went into half time with a deserved lead, as the visitors failed to register a shot on target in the first 45 minutes. Le Fondre replaced the ineffective Van La Parra at the break as Jackett reverted to more of a 4-4-1-1 formation for the second half. Jackett's team began the half on the front foot, with Wallace cutting inside from his new position on the left before driving low at Pickford, the first save required by the home keeper. It was a bright, positive start to the second half from Wolves, perhaps on the back of a stern talking-to from Jackett at the break, and they dominated the next 10 minutes in a relentless spell of pressure  Henry's low cross was gobbled up by Pickford with plenty of gold shirts in the box lurking for a tap-in.  And then seconds after Kevin McDonald's beautiful dinked ball into the box was taken too wide by Afobe's first touch, Jed Wallace was denied his first Wolves goal by a brilliant fingertip Pickford save from a side-footed 18-yard shot.  Wallace then crossed for Afobe who was set for a tap-in, but Pickford was there first, and then Clarke magnificently cleared from an inswinging Henry cross with Le Fondre ready to pounce.  It was all Wolves, but they had a scare when Batth almost lost out to Will Keane as the ball bounced towards Martinez, but the keeper claimed.  Back came the visitors and Le Fondre chipped wide from the edge of the area on the hour mark.  Wolves were firmly on top but with 19 minutes of the half gone and nothing to show for their efforts, Jackett rolled the dice with a double change.  On came Nathan Byrne and Sheyi Ojo for Henry and Wallace as the Wolves boss searched for better creativity from the flanks, while Keane was replaced by Jordan Hugill up front for the hosts, with 25 minutes left on the clock.  Ojo soon put his searing pace to good effect with a searching run down the left, but Afobe missed his cross by inches with that man Pickford claiming yet again.  Scott Golbourne and Iorfa were practically playing as wingers with Wolves bombing forward, but the home defence was holding firm.  Wolves were given another helping hand when Wright, booked four minutes earlier for a late foul on Le Fondre, took out Iorfa as the visitors looked to break from a corner, and referee Kettle had no hesitation in reducing Preston to nine men with nine minutes left on the clock.  The home fans were apoplectic with the referee and their fury went up yet another level when Pickford was booked for time wasting.   It was attack versus defence with Wolves throwing everything at the Preston back line, but nothing was coming off - Ojo played inside to Afobe but he lashed comfortably wide from 12 yards while off balance.  Ojo was dominating down the left flank and his cross met Batth, whose bullet header was off target.  Batth was playing up front and the same combination nearly yielded an equaliser in the final minute, with the captain's flicked header superbly beaten away by the seemingly unbeatable Pickford.  Then at the start of five minutes of injury time their pressure finally yielded a goal.  McDonald set his sights from 20 yards and superbly found the corner, cue bedlam in the away end as Wolves raced back for the kick off, intent on a winner.  And Wolves nearly found it when Iorfa sent a free header over Pickford's bar from a last-gasp corner. However it wasn't to be for Jackett's team, who gave everything but came up short in a game they should have won.

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP Venue: Deepdale Date: Saturday 26 September Kick-off: 15:00 BST

Kevin McDonald's stoppage-time equaliser earned Wolves a point and denied nine-man Preston North End their first home league win of the season.  McDonald, who signed a new contract on Friday, curled a shot past Jordan Pickford from the edge of the box. Daniel Johnson had fired North End in front from 20 yards before Joe Garner was sent off for a high boot on Wolves captain Danny Batth after 19 minutes. Bailey Wright was dismissed for two yellow cards before McDonald levelled.

TEAM NEWS

Defender Paul Huntington (hamstring strain) and forward Paul Gallagher (calf) are both doubts for Preston.  Striker Joe Garner is back from a one-game ban and Eoin Doyle, who was cup-tied

in midweek, gives boss Simon Grayson much-needed attacking options.

Skipper Danny Batth returns for Wolves after a stress fracture of the foot, which he suffered in April.  In midfield Dave Edwards is out (knee) and Conor Coady is suspended for his red card

against Brighton.

MATCH FACTS

Preston have won just two of their previous eight home games with Wolves (D2 L4). Wolves have kept two clean sheets in a row against Preston - they have never kept three in a row against

the Lilywhites.  Preston have failed to score in just one of their previous 32 home games, netting 64 goals. Benik Afobe has scored in 12 of his last 20 appearances for Wolverhampton

Wanderers. Joe Garner has had more shots than any other player (26, excluding blocked) but is yet to register a goal in the Championship so far this season.

CAPITAL ONE CUP THIRD ROUND

FT 90 +5 HT 1-0

Venue: Riverside Stadium Date: Tuesday, 22 September Kick-off: 19:45 BST

Middlesbrough eased into the fourth round for the first time in three seasons with an assured victory over Championship rivals Wolves.  Albert Adomah opened the scoring when Carlos De Pena's cross caused panic in the Wolves defence. The hosts doubled their advantage when Diego Fabbrini supplied the finish after a fine team move. And Adomah put the game beyond doubt after more fine build-up play from the influential De Pena.

None of the players on show at the Riverside Stadium had been born the last time Wolves had won an away game at Middlesbrough Neither had Kenny Jackett. In fact Steve Morgan and Jez Moxey hadn't, either, such is the quite incomprehensibly rotten record Wolves have in this particular part of the North-East.   If Wolves don't break the hoodoo when they return to the Riverside in the Championship next year, you wonder how many of the above will still be at the club when the run, currently at 24 win-less matches in 64 years, finally ends.  For Middlesbrough are a team going places and Wolves, on this evidence, are not.  Many changes were made by both sides as the respective bosses made clear where their priorities for the season lie, but Boro's class told.  There was a small chasm between the two sides in terms of quality going forward, intelligence and patience in possession, as well as creativity and purpose.  Defensive mistakes, once more, littered this Wolves performance, with opposition players left unmarked at crucial moments, and Ethan Ebanks-Landell dropping a howler for the opening goal.  But is Jackett more concerned about the consistent error-strewn displays at the back, or the dearth of imagination and cutting edge up front? Not the nicest of choices to make.  But the answer should be both, as Wolves are short of the required standard at both ends of the pitch at the moment and the longer it drags on the louder the dissatisfaction will grow.  Jackett made nine changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Brighton, many enforced with a host of players injured.  In came Carl Ikeme, handed the captain's armband to become Wolves' fifth skipper of the season, Jack Price and youngsters Sylvain Deslandes and Bright Enobakhare among others, while Dominic Iorfa was moved to centre-half. Jackett continued with a 4-4-1-1 formation, playing George Saville on the left of midfield.  His intentions to keep things compact in midfield and utilise the pace of Enobakhare and Rajiv Van La Parra were clear, and Wolves certainly managed the former in a gentle opening to the game.  Chances were few and far between, with Boro carrying the more potent threat through winger Adomah, who was handing a stern test to teenager Deslandes.   The Boro man got the better of their early exchanges, with Price having to be alert to intercept a dangerous early cross.  Deslandes and then Matt Doherty importantly intercepted menacing Boro cross-field passes, as the home team looked to edge in front.  Wolves' opportunities were largely restricted to set pieces, with a delicious inswinging free kick from Wallace taken off Deslandes' head.  Doherty made a crucial intervention to cut out former Wolves man George Friend's pass into the box with Diego Fabbrini ready to pounce on 26 minutes.  From the corner, though, Doherty, fresh from signing a new three-year contract a day earlier, was extremely fortunate to avoid embarrassment when he side-footed inches past his own post. Kike send a cross just over Adomah's head with Ikeme out of his goal, before Wallace fired in Wolves' first shot in anger, a long range effort that sailed high and wide.  The 'Bright' Enobakhare was full of chutzpah, looking to take players on with his infectious and exuberant style.  But his ambition wasn't matched elsewhere, with Wolves struggling to pick out an incisive final ball. On 37 minutes Boro took a deserved lead when Ebanks-Landell got in a right muddle from a left-wing cross and scuffed the ball into Adomah's path. He duly beat Ikeme from eight yards.  There was obvious frustration on the faces of some of the Wolves players.  They knew that, while their possession and occasional bright interplay was all very well, they needed to show the cutting edge that Boro possessed in the final third.  The hosts began the second-half with intent, as they looked to potentially put the game out of Wolves' reach. Doherty made successive important clearances from a cross and a corner.  Then Ebanks-Landell got his body in the way to block a Kike shot, after the Spaniard had initially got the better of both centre halves and brought Ikeme from his line in the process.   Boro were the more threatening side, with Wolves not able to hurt the home side where it matter. And it was no surprise when the home side doubled their lead just before the hour mark.   A well-worked move involving Emilio Nsue, Adomah and Carlos De Pena ended with Fabbrini lashing past Ikeme from 15 yards on 57 minutes.  Jackett was already planning to send on Afobe and Le Fondre before the goal and the pair duly arrived in a bid to salvage the tie.   They replaced Enobakhare and Van La Parra, who had both been full of running but received little to no service.  The head coach no doubt hoped for an instant impact from the pair, but instead Boro put the tie out of Wolves' reach.  De Pena picked out the unmarked Adomah at the back post and he had time to take a touch before slotting past the onrushing Ikeme for their second in seven minutes.  Wolves responded with their first shot on target of the evening a minute later, McDonald taking Saville's lay-off and side-footing at goalkeeper Tomas Mejias from the edge of the area.  It drew sarcastic cheers from the 312 hardy Wolves supporters who had made the long trip north to a chilly Riverside.  You couldn't blame them for having a dig at their players, who simply hadn't made their 170-mile jaunt worthwhile.   The final 25 minutes were a procession. Boro should have scored a couple more.  Kike dinked into the side netting and Fabbrini crashing against the bar, while Wolves threatened sporadically and belatedly through Afobe and Le Fondre.   It just wasn't good enough. The only plus is that the Capital One Cup is no longer a distraction.  Indeed, this result didn't cost Wolves anything other than a run in a competition they needn't be too bothered about, given their league woes.   But it was still a morale-sapping defeat. And it's clear that Jackett has an awful lot of work to do to get Wolves' season on track.

TEAM NEWS

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka is likely to make changes from the side which beat Nottingham Forest on Saturday.  Karanka has an almost fully-fit squad, with only Rhys Williams, Damia

Abella and Alex Baptiste missing.

Wolves are without the suspended Conor Coady after the midfielder was sent off against Brighton at the weekend.  Dave Edwards (knee), goalkeeper Emi Martinez and defenders Scott

Golbourne and Kortney Hause are also doubtful.

MATCH FACTS

This is the first meeting between the two sides in the League Cup.  Boro's Christian Stuani has scored four goals in two League Cup games and is the competition's top scorer this season.

Wolves have not progressed beyond the third round as a non-top flight club since 1995-96, when they reached the quarter-final as a second tier side. Middlesbrough have scored in 16

consecutive home third-round ties.

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP

Venue: Molineux Date: Saturday, 19 September Kick-off: 15:00 BST

Brighton remain unbeaten in the Championship after a disappointing goalless draw at 10-man Wolves.  Tomer Hemed had a great chance to put the league leaders ahead but his penalty was saved by on-loan Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez. Wolves striker Adam Le Fondre had a shot cleared off the line before Conor Coady saw red for a poor tackle.  Beram Kayal, Liam Rosenior and Jamie Murphy had efforts late on but the Seagulls were unable to find a winner.  Brighton are now three points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough at the top of the Championship, with Wolves sitting 18th, two points above the relegation zone.  Seagulls flying high Brighton are the only unbeaten side left in the Championship, having won six games and drawn two.

They have now lost just three of their previous 25 league games against Wolves. The first real opportunity of the game came after Wolves defender Scott Golbourne fouled Murphy inside the area, but Martinez pulled off a brilliant double save from Hemed's effort and then the striker's follow-up.

Jackett on Wolves v Brighton

The hosts should have been ahead when James Henry's free-kick was headed into Le Fondre's path by Ethan Ebanks-Landell, but his touch towards goal was stopped by Hemed.  After Coady was dismissed for his poorly-timed tackle on Rosenior, the Seagulls pressed forward and Kayal and Rosenior had shots saved, while Murphy nodded wide.  Wolves struggled to create when they were a man down, with Benik Afobe's pulled shot their best effort in a second half with few chances.  Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett: "It was a very well-earned point against an impressive side. Brighton were good today, moved the ball very well and got a high number of crosses in.  "We had to work hard for the clean sheet in the dying minutes. When they put Bobby Zamora and Elvis Manu on, you wonder how the dynamics of the game are going to change.  But the young centre-half pairing (Kortney Hause and Ethan Ebanks-Landell) stood very firm and showed a lot of promise."

Hughton on Wolves v Brighton

Brighton manager Chris Hughton: "I couldn't fault the commitment of the players and I thought they had a real go.  We had a midweek game and Wolves hadn't and there were little periods in that first half when they maybe looked a little fresher than we did.  So it is difficult to be too disappointed but, of course, we did have a really good opportunity with the penalty."

TEAM NEWS

Striker Adam Le Fondre is a major doubt for Wolves with a shin injury he picked up in training.

Nouha Dicko's season-ending knee injury has already left Wolves with only two fit strikers - Benik Afobe and 17-year-old Bright Enobakhare.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton again has a full-strength squad as winger Kazenga LuaLua is back from a one-match ban.

Elvis Manu, on the bench for the win against Rotherham, could be in line to make his debut.

MATCH FACTS

The Seagulls are the only unbeaten side left in the Championship (W6 D1).

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP

Venue: Macron Stadium Date: Saturday 12 September Kick-off: 15:00 BST

Beeb: Bolton held on to beat Wolves to claim their first win of the season and move up seven places, to 18th in the table.  Liam Feeney met a long ball in the box to fire Bolton ahead, having earlier gone close with a double chance.  Zach Clough made it 2-0 from the spot after Ethan Ebanks-Landell brought Wellington Silva down in the area.  Prince-Desir Gouano fouled Adam Le Fondre to allow Benik Afobe to pull one back from the spot, while Ben Amos did well to deny Le Fondre late on.  The victory was Bolton's first in 12 games in all competitions, dating back to 6 April, and a first triumph at home since overcoming Millwall 2-0 at the Macron Stadium more than six months ago.

Liam Feeney was allowed room to fire Bolton in front and then, on the stroke of half time, a needless Ethan Ebanks-Landell foul allowed Zach Clough to double their lead.  Benik Afobe halved the deficit, after Adam Le Fondre won a second-half penalty for Wolves.  But, despite some late pressure, Kenny Jackett's team failed to find an elusive equaliser and slipped to their third defeat of the season.  It was all the more galling given Bolton's dreadful record up to now - they registered their first victory and scored just their second and third goals of the campaign. Jackett sprang a couple of surprises with his starting line-up, dropping Carl Ikeme despite his Nigeria heroics, while Kevin McDonald wasn't even on the bench.  Emiliano Martinez was given another chance in goal, with Jed Wallace handed his full Championship debut and Le Fondre partnered Benik Afobe up front. Bolton had only scored one goal all season but the home side came racing out of the blocks, creating a double chance for Liam Feeney.

Former Bolton loanee Le Fondre was looking to impress and he got Wolves' first shot away with a low drive from the right of the box, that goalkeeper Ben Amos comfortably grabbed.  Feeney then took advantage of hesitant defending to hand the Trotters the lead - he latched onto a long through ball and beat Martinez with ease, as Wolves failed to get anywhere near the Bolton number seven.  Jackett's team responded well and Ebanks-Landell rose highest to meet a James Henry corner, forcing Amos to tip over.  From the second corner, Afobe flashed a shot wide on the turn as Wolves ramped up the pressure.  They were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty on 28 minutes, when Afobe's shirt was clearly pulled in the box by Prince-Desire Gouano, but referee Scott Duncan was unmoved.  Wolves fashioned a succession of half chances, with Afobe tamely nodding a Henry cross over and then Wallace curling harmlessly at Amos from 20 yards, after smartly creating space.  Wallace was involved again when he met Le Fondre's cross only to head wide, before Henry's blistering drive was prodded over by Amos just before the break.

But Wolves' good play was undone when they went into the break 2-0 down, after a rash challenge by Ebanks-Landell.  A corner came back into the Wolves box, with tricky Arsenal loanee Wellington Silva keeping close control.  He had men to beat but Ebanks-Landell, rushing back into the area, needlessly tripped him for a clear penalty, which was duly dispatched by Clough. Wolves began the second half with intent and Ebanks-Landell, in a carbon copy of a first half chance, headed Henry's out-swinging corner over the bar when well placed. Bolton, who lost Neil Danns to injury causing a long stoppage, hit back through the dangerous Feeney, who sent a diving header past the post.  Afobe's pace then yielded arguably Wolves' chance of the game when he raced clear, cut inside and fed Wallace whose shot from 12 yards, admittedly under pressure from a defender, was wide.  Edwards raced back to intercept a cross in the nick of time with Feeney about to pounce.  Then Jackett made his first change of the game on the hour mark, with Sheyi Ojo replacing Wallace.  Bolton held on to beat Wolves to claim their first win of the season and move up seven places, to 18th in the table.

Wolves accepted a £2m offer for Richard Stearman, and two clubs are in for Rajiv van la Parra.

Super-sub Adam Le Fondre's first Wolves goal gave them a crucial victory as they came from behind to beat Charlton 2-1 at Molineux.

Things looked dire for Wolves when a below-par opening 55 minutes was capped when Johann Gudmundsson's shot went under Carl Ikeme for Charlton's opener.  But the arrivals of Le Fondre and Sheyi Ojo from the bench - the former replacing Nouha Dicko who was stretched off with a serious-looking injury - transformed Wolves' fortunes.  David Edwards equalised from close range when he stabbed home a low cross.  And then with just five minutes to go Le Fondre flicked home Ojo's left-wing centre to give Wolves, who survived seven minutes of injury time, three crucial points.  Much of the talk before kick off was whether Benik Afobe - the subject of continuous transfer speculation - would be in the Wolves XI.  But it was Richard Stearman's absence that was the talking point, with the defender absent from the squad amid the breaking news that Wolves had accepted a bid of £2m from Championship rivals Fulham for the 28-year-old.

There were four changes from the team that lost to Cardiff, with Scott Golbourne, Matt Doherty, James Henry and Nouha Dicko replacing Stearman, Dominic Iorfa, Rajiv van La Parra and Sheyi Ojo.  And it was one of the incoming quartet, Henry, who sparked Wolves into life in the early stages.  A magical run from Afobe opened up the Charlton defence in the third minute - he played to Henry who cut inside before curling inches wide of the far post.  Henry has been the subject of interest from Charlton all summer and just a few weeks ago his Wolves future looked to be in doubt.  And the wide man seemed intent on showing Charlton what they had missed out on, creating almost all of Wolves' chances in the opening stages.  Lovely work from Henry down the left ended with him sending a left-footed cross onto David Edwards' head, but he nodded over.  Henry then left Charlton captain Chris Solly for dead, but Dicko took the floating cross away from Edwards. evin McDonald was then close to finding the unmarked Dicko, with Patrick Bauer taking the ball off his head with Dicko primed to nod goalwards.  And then Henry, following a short corner, forced Pope to tip over the bar with a decent effort from range.  Charlton's Simon Magienok was forced off through injury, with Igor Vetokele replacing him.  Wolves then broke at pace, with Golbourne starting the move, and the left-back was then fouled just outside the box, only for Afobe to waste the 20-yard free kick with a tame shot at Pope.  Henry was then inches away from setting up Edwards with a superb cross after a jinking run, but the sliding Edwards was a fraction away from connecting.  Charlton gradually came into the game as the half progressed, drawing a couple of regulation saves from Ikeme, but the half badly petered out.  Wolves had decent spells of possession but there was a lack of intensity in their play and, Henry aside, creativity too.  The drab football continued at the start of the second half with an unbalanced Wolves midfield providing little to no service for Afobe and Dicko.  And Wolves paid for their tepid performance when Charlton took the lead on 55 minutes.  Johann Gudmundsson, a player Wolves have shown interest in, cut inside and fired at Ikeme from 15 yards - but the ball went under the goalkeeper's body.  It was yet another goalkeeping blunder for Wolves this season - arguably the fifth that has directly cost them a goal.  And things went from bad to worse soon after when Dicko was stretchered off with a serious looking injury.  Adam Le Fondre scores the winnerAdam Le Fondre replaced him, with Sheyi Ojo coming on for Kevin McDonald at the same time.  And within three minutes Wolves had a vital equaliser when a low right-wing cross was stabbed home at the second attempt by captain Edwards.  The relief at Molineux was palpable and soon after they had a good chance to take the lead, but Afobe nodded Henry's cross at Pope.  Henry was yet again involved when his cross drifted dangerously goalwards, forcing Pope to palm over his own bar.  And from the resulting corner Edwards missed a sitter to make it 2-1.  Henry's inswinging was nodded across goal by Doherty and Edwards somehow send his header over the bar from all of two yards out with the goal gaping.  Edwards' effort levels were tremendous yet again and he raced back into his own box to crucially deflect a Bauer shot wide.  Le Fondre then had a decent opportunity from Ojo's cross but lashes his first-time shot on the turn over the bar.  But when the substitutes combined again with just five minutes remaining Wolves completed their comeback - Ojo's perfect low centre was prodded home by Le Fondre to send the home crowd into raptures.  Wolves had to withstand seven minutes of stoppage time owing to Dicko's injury, but it passed by without incident as Wolves held on.

Wolves sealed their first home league win of the season and put an end to Charlton Athletic's unbeaten start thanks to Adam Le Fondre's late goal.  Johann Gudmundsson gave Charlton the lead in the second half with a powerful shot drilled under keeper Carl Ikeme.  Wolves equalised soon after when Dave Edwards coolly poked the ball home on the rebound after his shot was blocked.  And Le Fondre gave Wolves all three points when he fired Benik Afobe's low cross into the net.  Wolves almost took an early lead when Afobe laid the ball on to the onrushing James Henry, who curled the ball just wide of the post.  Ikeme kept the scores level when he caught Chris Solly's free-kick, while Wolves almost found a breakthrough but Edwards failed to latch onto Henry's cross.  The visitors were in front after the break through Gudmundsson's low shot and they could have doubled their lead when Zakarya Bergdich fired wide after stealing possession off Matt Doherty.  After a delay in play following an injury to Nouha Dicko, Wolves restored parity when Henry's low cross was stabbed past Charlton keeper Nick Pope at the second attempt by Edwards.  The hosts marked their first home league win of the season when Afobe's low cross deceived the Charlton back line to find its way to Le Fondre, who made no mistake from close range.

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett:  "I felt it was a deserved win. I thought we passed the ball very well and some of our play was excellent but we couldn't get that final ball or take the chances up and around the box in the first half.  We went a goal behind slightly unluckily then I was delighted with the character of the team to come back after that.   After two recent losses it was great to get three points going into the international break."

Charlton manager Guy Luzon:  "Of course I am very disappointed because I am pleased with our performance especially in the second half.  We played well and played positive football, we moved the ball well. We scored one and had a chance to score the second.  In the second half we had an influence on the game and took possession. I changed the tactics a bit and played with three in the midfield and we played better. So I am very disappointed because I think that we deserved more then zero points. But it is part of the game and we continue."

FT 90 +5 HT 1-0 25 August 2015

A confidence-boosting win went a little way to erasing memories of the banal defeat at Cardiff on Saturday. http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2015/08/25/wolves-2-barnet-1-report-and-pictures/ And, just as importantly, several young starlets staked claims for first-team berths on a night where there were far more positives than negatives.  It was by no means a perfect performance - Wolves again faded late on and carelessly allowed Barnet back into the game.  But the majority of the game was relentless one-way traffic with vibrant young Wolves playing some imaginative, fast-paced football and creating a host of goalscoring chances.  They should have been out of sight long before Bira Dembele exposed their weakness at defending set pieces by pulling a goal back.  As it was, they had two goals to show for their attacking efforts, which was the least they deserved.  One came from teenager Bright Enobakhare who found the net just three minutes into his senior debut.  And the very lively Sheyi Ojo took the combined age of Wolves' goalscorers to 35 with a well-placed second after half time.  There were few surprises before kick off with, as expected, boss Kenny Jackett making several changes from the side that lost so miserably at Cardiff.  He handed debuts to teenagers Enobakhare and Sylvain Deslandes, as well as summer signing Jed Wallace, while loan striker Adam Le Fondre was given his first start in Wolves colours.  Only captain for the night Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Kortney Hause and Sheyi Ojo kept their places as Jackett fielded a side with an average age of just 21.   And the youngest member of the side made an immediate impact - scoring inside three minutes.  Le Fondre latches onto a short back pass and rounded Barnet goalkeeper Jamie Stephens, before laying it on a plate for Enobakhare who couldn't miss from two yards.  It was a dream start for the Nigerian-born youngster, who earned his opportunity after some impressive displays in pre-season, and was booked for his

understandably exuberant celebration.  Deslandes looked to repeat his team-mate's feat five minutes later but scuffed his shot after good work from Wallace and Jack Price.  Price was pulling all the early strings and the vibrant Enobakhare, playing in the number 10 role behind Le Fondre, was constantly looking to get on the ball and link play.  More nice interplay involving Wallace and this time the returning George Saville ended with Enobakhare dragging a 25-yarder wide.  Sheyi Ojo then had two golden chances in two minutes - which both came via mistakes from Barnet's Mauro Vilhete and both of which were wastefully spurned.  Liverpool loanee Ojo took the ball off Vilhete's feet just outside the box but, with Stephens off guard, curled over the bar. And it was deja vu a minute later when the slack Vilhete lost out to Ojo. This time the 18-year-old had time to set himself but then horribly skied his shot with just the goalkeeper to beat.  Wolves were dominating possession with Barnet's only danger coming from long throws by Sam Muggleton.  The impressive Price dinked a delicious ball over the visitors' defence, met by the rampaging Matt Doherty, who clipped a half volley onto the top of the net.  Saville and Enobakhare combined to tee up Deslandes, who was never shy to race forward, and the young Frenchman forced Stephens into a save from a tight angle.   Le Fondre fired into the side netting as the chances continued at a relentless pace towards the end of the half.  Wolves were positive, dynamic and showed excellent movement - in stark contrast to the Cardiff horror show.

Beeb http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33969991

Wolves survived a late fightback from League Two side Barnet to reach the third round of the Capital One Cup.  Adam Le Fondre found debutant Bright Enobakhare, who put the Championship club ahead from two yards. The hosts squandered several chances to extend their lead, before Sheyi Ojo collected Le Fondre's pass to curl in from just inside the box. Bira Dembele pulled one back from close range to set up a nervy finish, but the Bees could not find an equaliser .

Kenwyne Jones headed past a stranded Carl Ikeme.  Sammy Ameobi added a second just two minutes after replacing Jones in the second half, his shot deflecting in off Kortney Hause.  Wolves

offered little in attack and slipped to a second successive defeat having squandered a two-goal lead against QPR.

Goals from Kenwyne Jones and Sammy Ameobi gave Cardiff a convincing victory as Wolves failed to even register a shot on target in a meek defeat.

Carl Ikeme was restored in goal but his blunder led to Cardiff's opening goal with Jones nodding over the keeper who got nowhere near a left-wing cross.  And Newcastle loanee Ameobi - who came so close to joining Wolves last month - made it 2-0 after replacing the injured Jones, lashing a deflected shot home from a corner.  Lacklustre Wolves failed to produce a single save from Cardiff keeper David Marshall as the went down to their second defeat in four days.   Wolves have now conceded seven goals in four games, but it was their lack of creativity up front that will have alarmed Jackett even more in what was one of the worst performance in his Wolves tenure.  Kenny Jackett rang the changes after the 3-2 defeat to QPR on Wednesday, replacing Martinez, Scott Golbourne, James Henry and Nouha Dicko with Ikeme, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Rajiv van La Parra and Sheyi Ojo.  As in their previous two games Wolves could have taken a very early lead when three minutes in David Edwards span as he collected Ojo's cross and fired narrowly over.    The Welshman, supporting Benik Afobe up front, was looking dangerous in the early stages and could have gone down when running through on goal after collecting a slack Sean Morrison pass, but stayed on his feet and a heavy touch saw keeper David Marshall collect.  Wolves had plenty of possession in the early stages but did little with it and Cardiff gradually came into the game.  Richard Stearman blocked a goalbound Fabio shot, before Ikeme made a smart save from Joe Mason's shot.  Ojo and Edwards combined again for another good Wolves chance, with the on-loan Liverpool man's cross met by Edwards who timed his run to perfection but sent a shot on the slide past the post.  Cardiff had the ball in the net on 26 minutes but Mason's tap-in was ruled out after he was adjudged to have kicked the ball out of Ikeme's hand with the keeper having both hands on the ball.   A period of lacklustre play followed with neither side able to find a cutting edge in the final third.  Afobe was desperately quiet up front but had little service to speak of.   Then out of the blue five minutes before half time Wolves created the chance of the game so far.   Kevin McDonald's shot was deflected for a corner - with Cardiff asleep Van La Parra played short to Ojo and his floating cross was met by Kortney Hause, just a yard or two from goal, but he sent his header over the bar.  And Wolves were made to rue that spurned opportunity when Cardiff took the lead on the stroke of half time.  Fabio was given time to send a deep cross into the box and dangerman Jones lept above Stearman and Ebanks-Landell to nod into an empty net, with Ikeme in no-man's land as he belated attempted to reach the ball.

Cardiff began the second half on the front foot and Hause had to be on the ball to take the ball off Jones' toes with the big striker about to shoot.  Jones went down injured in the process but Wolves, to the supporters' annoyance, played on and broke clear, with Van La Parra's shot deflected past the post and with Afobe just not able to reach the ball.  Jones - Cardiff's premier threat up to then - limped off injury, but his replacement Sammy Ameobi was no easier to handle, with his pace causing big problems after he was brought on.  And Ameobi, who came so close to joining Wolves on loan in the summer before joining Cardiff at the last minute, soon doubled the Welsh club's lead.  Peter Whittingham's corner dropped to the Newcastle man and he lashed a right-foot volley past Ikeme via a deflection.  That forced Jackett into making a double save, with Nouha Dicko and James Henry on for McDonald and Ojo to go 4-4-2.  But despite the changes Wolves struggled to make any headway, with Cardiff looking the more likely scorers.  After Iorfa gave the ball away Ameobi raced forward, dumping Ebanks-Landell and Coady on their backsides and then curling a right-footed shot just past the post.  There was plenty of endeavour from Wolves as the minutes ticked down, but little inspiration, with a wonderful Iorfa cross which flew just ahead of Dicko one of few bright moments.  Henry, with six players waiting in the box, sent a cross nearer to the 1,000 travelling Wolves than his team mates with a dreadful late cross, which summed up Wolves' second half performance.

http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2015/08/19/wolves-2-qpr-3-report/

Benik Afobe - the subject of intense transfer speculation linking him with Norwich earlier in the day - predictably got on the scoresheet to give Wolves an early lead.  And when Kevin McDonald's piledriver doubled their advantage it all looked rosy for Wolves who were playing some delightful free-flowing football.  But it all started to go wrong after Charlie Austin nodded Phillips' cross past Emiliano Martinez just before half time.  QPR were by far the better side after the break and with Wolves, who contributed to their downfall with some sluggish defending, saw their unbeaten recorded ended when two goals from Phillips saw QPR nick the points.

Kenny Jackett kept faith with the same XI that drew 1-1 with Hull City on Sunday, meaning Emiliano Martinez kept his place in goal.  And like against Hull, Wolves came flying out of the blocks. With 70 seconds on the clock David Edwards cut inside from the left and crossed to the far post where Afobe, stretched, nodded wide from just a couple of yards out. There was some excellent early pressure from the hosts who were overloading QPR in midfield.  They had a scare at the other end though when Martinez, hindered by the slippery conditions with heavy rain soaking Molineux, spilled Massimo Luongo's shot, grabbing it with the ball practically on the goal line.  McDonald was pulling the strings in midfield and Wolves tested the QPR back line again with a dangerous low cross from Dominic Iorfa.  And on 17 minutes the pressure told when Afobe inevitably got on the score-sheet. After a brisk attack involving McDonald and Nouha Dicko, James Henry's cross was deflected to Afobe via Edwards and he made no mistake from just six yards out.  QPR looked to respond immediately and Tjaronn Chery's shot tested Martinez, who again needed two attempts to claim.  But Wolves were the more cohesive unit going forward and they went close again soon after.  Edwards let fly from range with a rare piledriver, which was deflected wide for a corner, and from that Kortney Hause's header flashed past the post.  McDonald doubled the lead with a scorcher on 24 minutes as Wolves took total control.  He had plenty of time to think about his shot when the ball dropped to him, but kept his cool to unleash a perfectly-placed shot past a helpless Robert Green in the QPR goal.  The Scot said earlier this week he was concentrating on his football - with his ongoing contract saga now on the back burner - and he was being true to his word with a dominant midfield performance.  A clever chip over the QPR back line from the 26-year-old found Edwards, whose header across goal was sliced into Green's arms.   But seven minutes before the break the visitors pulled one back, very much against the run of play, when Albion target Phillips whipped a vicious cross towards Austin who sent a bullet header past Martinez.  Afobe rolled Grant Hall after taking Dicko's pass as Wolves looked to restore their two-goal advantage, but Hall did well to block. Phillips, looking lively on both flanks with his pace and trickery saw a long-ranger solidly saved by Martinez as the visitors ended the half on top, a stark contrast to what has gone before it.

Jackett changed things at half time, sending on Adam le Fondre in place on Nouha Dicko, giving the on-loan Cardiff man a proper chance to impress after being used as an injury time substitute in the two previous league games.  McDonald picked up where he left off before the break, sending a perfect through ball for Afobe to latch onto - with a sniff of goal the prolific front-man looked likely to score, but prodded straight at Green with two defenders for company.  And on 52 minutes Wolves, who had largely dominated the game, had little to show for it when Phillips scored a shot equaliser. He cut in from the right and drilled low with his left foot - it took a slight deflection and rolled into the corner past Martinez.  The goal stunned Molineux and just three minutes later QPR could have been in front, with Nedum Onuoha allowed to sneak in unnoticed at the back post before Martinez denied him from a tight angle.  Edwards broke well from midfield to win a free kick just outside the box, Onuoha's hack on the Welshman earning a deserved booking, and Afobe bulged the net with the resulting effort but it bristled the side netting, much to the embarrassment of half the crowd who thought it was in.  Karl Henry hacked down Afobe and earned a booking, a decision loudly cheered by some supporters who continuously booed the former captain throughout the game.  Austin then released Chery whose low drive was saved Martinez.  Rajiv van La Parra replaced Henry with Wolves struggling to recreate their first dynamism, and it nearly worked when the Dutchman's clever spin and pass released Afobe who flashed an effort across goal.  But Wolves just couldn't get going and QPR, in the ascendancy, completed an incredible comeback when that man Phillips picked his spot from 25 yards, beating Martinez's despairing dive.  It wasn't the hardest hit of shots and Martinez, perhaps wrong-footed, will have been disappointed to see it sail past him.  He made a smart parry to push Chery's free kick wide, with QPR running riot.  The action was coming thick and fast and McDonald's shot took a wicked deflection off Onuoha and bounced agonisingly wide.  Martinez stuck out a leg to deny Chery's low effort, before Le Fondre's shot was too easy for Green.

There was plenty of time for a Wolves equaliser but, with Afobe isolated and missing his strike partner Dicko, their challenge petered out.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33874116

Charlie Austin scored once and Matt Phillips struck twice as QPR came from 2-0 down to beat Wolves for their first league win this season.  Wolves led 2-0 through Benik Afobe's controlled, close-range finish and Kevin McDonald's shot from 18 yards.  Austin, a target for several Premier League clubs, started the comeback with a header from Phillips's cross before the break.  Phillips levelled from the edge of the box and won it with a 25-yard effort.  QPR had only taken one point from their opening two games following relegation and they owed their victory to two players who could leave the club this month.  West Brom still want Scotland winger Phillips, while Austin has interested a number of top-flight clubs, with QPR asking £15m for the 26-year-old.  Austin, who was the fourth top scorer in the Premier League last season, has now scored in two successive games.

Wolves had looked in control when a Premier League target of their own, Afobe, scored from close range before McDonald doubled the lead. Boss Kenny Jackett confirmed after the game that they have turned down a bid from Norwich for the 22-year-old, who scored 32 goals in total last season. QPR showed the top-flight quality they still have when Phillips set up Austin's goal. The equaliser came when Phillips's weak shot from 18 yards eluded everyone and his winner from distance should have been saved by Emiliano Martinez.

Jackett on Wolves v QPR

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett: "Benik has been very good and was a threat. Any conversation we had before the game was about the football.  We're not looking to sell our best players and within two weeks of the window closing we're looking to build. We had good control of the game. QPR came back into it quickly and got the goal before half-time but the two goals in the second half were disappointing defensively."

QPR boss Chris Ramsey: "Matty is a match-winner on his day and he is someone who will always need marking.

Ramsey on Wolves v QPR

"I'm really hoping we will have him but no-one can tell, people make knee-jerk reactions and spend money they don't have. I hope that will add another zero. I am very pleased with the respect Matt and Charlie have shown the club. They have been very professional in the way they have conducted themselves. Charlie is fitter now than the opening day and his hold-up play has answered a few questions people have."

Wolves came from behind to defeat Newport County and seal a place in the second round of the League Cup.   Scott Boden gave League Two Newport the lead with an unmarked header from five yards after just six minutes.  The hosts equalised when Nouha Dicko flicked Sheyi Ojo's cross past Joe Day. Wolves went in front when Benik Afobe converted a penalty after he had been fouled by Scott Barrow before Danny Holmes forced a decent save from Wolves keeper Emiliano Martinez.  Victory saw Wolves seal a place in the second round of the League Cup for the first time in three seasons.  After goals from Boden and Dicko, Wolves duo Conor Coady and Afobe were both denied by Day. Afobe then sent Day the wrong way from the penalty spot and late on debutant Martinez saved well from Tom Owen-Evans to secure victory.

Wolves will hand a debut to on-loan Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as long as the paperwork on the deal, struck on Monday, is finished in time. Head coach Kenny Jackett will make

changes from their opening Championship win over Blackburn, meaning Adam Le Fondre should make his full debut.

Newport boss Terry Butcher has several injury worries. Winger Lenell John-Lewis (hamstring), Yan Klukowski (dead leg) and defender Kevin Feely (thigh) are out.

MATCH FACTS

This will be the first competitive meeting between these sides since April 1988. Neither side has failed to score in the four previous clashes between the two, with each side winning two

apiece. Wolves have been knocked out of the League Cup at the first round stage by a League Two side in the last two seasons (Morecambe in 2013-14, Northampton in 2014-15). Newport have

conceded in every one of their last nine League Cup games, at an average of 2.8 goals per game.

Blackburn 1 Wolves 2 - Report and pictures at http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2015/08/08/blackburn-x-wolves-x-report-and-pictures/

A controversial David Edwards goal gave Wolves three points as they made a perfect start to the season.   Edwards appeared to handle Nouha Dicko's cross as he diverted the ball into the net but, despite loud Blackburn protests, the goal stood.  Wolves had earlier taken the lead through their first attempt on goal, when Benik Afobe continued where he left off last season with a superb finish.   A blunder from goalkeeper Carl Ikeme helped Rovers equalise, when he palmed Craig Conway's wickedly deflected effort into the net.  But, despite some strong late pressure from the hosts, Wolves held on for a repeat of the scoreline on the opening day of the 2011-12 season.   Wolves started on the back foot and within two minutes Jordan Rhodes hit the post, taking advantage of a slack Kortney Hause pass before firing a 20-yard rasper against Ikeme's right-hand post.  Defensive errors littered Wolves early play, as they struggled to get a foothold in the game. Ben Marshall and Shane Duffy both sent efforts wide, before Ikeme showed wonderful reflexes to tip a Duffy header over the bar.  Blackburn debutant Danny Guthrie and then Conway fired shots off target for Rovers, as the visitors continued to struggle.   But from nowhere - and with their first shot of the season - Afobe gave them the lead just before the half hour mark, taking Conor Coady's through ball and cutely finishing past onrushing goalkeeper David Raya.  The goal settled Jackett's team and Dicko stabbed just wide from a powerful James Henry cross. But, on 39 minutes, they were rocked by a freak Blackburn equaliser.   Dominic Iorfa and Stearman both make excellent last ditch challenges and the ball fell to Conway, whose 18-yard shot looped viciously goalwards and Ikeme misjudged the flight, palming the ball into the net.  Rovers were good value for their equaliser but, on the stroke of half time Wolves re-took the lead, in controversial circumstances.  Dicko's left-wing cross got the faintest of touches from Edwards - and replays confirmed it had hit his hand on its way past Raya.  Blackburn protested, but referee Mark Haywood was unmoved and awarded the goal.  Wolves came flying out of the blocks in the second half and should have made it 3-1 within two minutes, but Afobe missed Iorfa's low cross after the full-back bombed forward.   Henry and Dicko both saw shots blocked in what was a scrappy start to the second-half.   Both sides were struggling to exert themselves in midfield and the game became littered with slack passes and niggly fouls.   Then Wolves had a let-off when Rhodes got in-behind the defence, only to fire across goal and just wide in a glorious opportunity.   Wolves then came within inches of making the game safe, when Henry delightfully skipped through two players and sent a long-range effort crashing off Raya's crossbar.

Afobe's rasping 20-yarder was straight at the goalkeeper, as Wolves aimed to take control in the closing stages.  But Blackburn came on strong and pushed hard for an equaliser, with Marshall and substitute Fode Koita testing Ikeme from range.  Koita then sent a superb ball into the box which was screaming out for a touch, but it flashed across goal and to safety.  Sheyi Ojo and Adam Le Fondre both made their debuts late on, with boss Kenny Jackett sending on some fresh legs.

Beeb http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33744134

A controversial winning goal just before half-time gave Wolves an opening day victory at Blackburn.  Midfielder Dave Edwards appeared to divert in Nouha Dicko's cross with a hand to give the visitors the lead.  Wolves had recovered from a slow start to lead through Benik Afobe, who collected Edwards' flick-on and finished past goalkeeper David Raya.  Rovers levelled when Carl Ikeme palmed in Craig Conway's shot, but the hosts could not force a second equaliser.  Wolves escaped twice in stoppage time, as Fode Koita hit an upright from the edge of the box and then Corry Evans failed to convert a cross at the back post.  Only two minutes had been played when Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes, the subject of a reported £12m bid from Middlesbrough, hit a post from 25 yards.  Rovers defender Shane Duffy sent one header off target and forced Wolves goalkeeper Ikeme to tip another over before Wanderers went in front on the half hour.  Afobe, who netted 19 times on loan at MK Dons last term and a further 13 following a January move to Wolves, continued his excellent scoring form from last season when he beat Raya.     Conway's deflected effort made it 1-1, before Edwards scored the winner at Ewood Park for the second season in succession - this time in more controversial circumstances.  Rhodes shot wide with just Ikeme to beat, while Wolves winger James Henry hit the bar from 25 yards late on, and despite Rovers' late flurry, Wolves held on for victory.

Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer: "Jordan's strike was a hell of a strike and it probably sums up the game for us. We're talking about inches and the small margins today.

"We've hit the woodwork twice, the goalkeeper has made a couple of decent saves, we have a penalty that is not given and there's massive controversy with what is eventually their winner.

When you put all that evidence before me and ask 'were you unlucky not to come out with something?' Logically it tells you we were very unfortunate. "

Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett: "It hit his hand, ball to hand. I wouldn't say it was deliberate, but yes it definitely made contact. It was a whipped cross in and he's gone to head it. You can't have your arms by your side at that point, but did it hit his hand? Yes it did. It was a great three points away from home. I thought we had spells of possession where we looked very good and the diamond midfield gave us an overload and really helped us in spells."
