A useful draw against a strong Toon team, bit marred by an incompetent referee, overawed by Newcastle and allowed them to influence his decisions, including disallowing a penalty claim, booking Wolves palyers on their first offence and letting the visitors get away with pushes and kicks.  Barton should have been redcarded for an awful tackle which put Van Damme out of the game.  He feigned injury at every chance and it's no coincidence that most of the Wolves bookings came for tackles on him.   Attwell is clearly out of his depth and should be taken off the list.

Mick McCarthy's 200th game in charge of Wolves finished the same way as his first - in a one all draw. It was on the south coast at Plymouth that Mick began his reign but it was Newcastle, a team from the other end of the country, that took a point away from Molineux after a feisty contest that heralded 12 bookings. Jelle Van Damme returned at left back in place of George Elokobi as the only change to the team that had started at Everton.  The first chance of the game fell to Andy Carroll but Marcus Hahnemann had little difficulty in saving the striker's header following a Wayne Routledge centre.There was a much more serious threat to the home goal after Jonas Gutierrez had danced past two midfield challenges. He slipped the ball to Routledge who ran to the by-line before hitting a low cross that went behind Carroll.  Hahnemann and Carroll were then spoken to by the referee after the keeper had taken exception to the striker's aerial challenge Van Damme failed to clear a long ball into the box and Kevin Nolan had two attempts to force the ball home before Hahnemann claimed.  On 22 minutes Doyle turned his marker on the halfway line and set off on what would have been an unchallenged path for goal only to be halted by the referee, who for a reason only known to him, then booked the Irishman.  It was one of a number of decisions by Stuart Attwell that weren't exactly endearing him to the fans of either side. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake won Wolves' first corner of the game off Fabricio Coloccini and it almost led to the opening goal. Dave Jones lifted over the flag-kick and Ebanks-Blake rose at the far post to send a bullet header against the post. The ball bounced out to Doyle who was wide with a low shot from the edge of the box.  Newcastle keeper Steve Harper needed treatment to a bloody nose after he had collided with team-mate Nolan in attempting to clear a Jones corner  Van Damme was booked for a late challenge on Gutierrez and he was followed into the book by Carroll, for dissent, after he had blasted a first time shot high over the bar after a cross from Nolan. Wolves moved into a 43rd minute lead through Ebanks-Blake who volleyed home after he had won the battle with James Perch for Van Damme's cross from the right.  Carroll headed wide as the visitors looked for an immediate response before the half closed with a booking for Matt Jarvis for fouling Barton, andan unproductive corner form Jones.

Joey Barton needed treatment after a hard, but fair tackle from Karl Henry who clearly won the ball.  Five minutes into the half Wolves looked to have won a penalty after Jarvis was tripped by Perch as he ran into the box. It looked certain spot kick but the referee decided otherwise and awarded a goal kick. Van Damme was replaced by Ronald Zubar who was on the field for just five minutes before he saw yellow after a tackle on Gutierrez. From the free-kick conceded Newcastle drew level. Barton pumped the ball into the box and Carroll powered a header past Hahnemann. Carroll almost struck again as he hit a fierce drive, after a Routledge centre, forcing Hahnemann to parry with Jody Craddock clearing at the expense of a corner.  Doyle and Jones were replaced by Steven Fletcher and Adlene Guedioura respectively for the final 20 minutes. Guedioura soon lost possession allowing Newcastle to break through Nolan but Barton fired high and wide after taking a pass from his captain.  Guedioura then went into the book after a clumsy challenge on Barton.  A superb piece of work by Stephen Ward denied Newcastle the lead in the 82nd minute. Barton lifted a free-kick into the area and substitute Shola Ameobi headed the ball across goal towards Nolan who was about to net from close range when Ward nipped in to smash the ball behind.  Christophe Berra, for a foul on Routledge, Henry for a challenge on Barton, and Ameobi for a tackle on Kevin Foley, joined the long list of bookings.  Perch fouled Jarvis to the left of the box and was booked for his troubles. The winger took the free-kick himself and the ball was headed out as far as Guedioura who was wide with his shot from 20-yards.The 12th and final booking came in stoppage time when Barton was cautioned after catching Foley.

"We started very well, but we had to. You can't be on the back foot here, because Wolves are a very good side who play at a high tempo.
"If Andy Carroll got the [England] call tomorrow, I am quite sure he would be available.
"Should he be picked? That is the decision for the manager. All I can say is how delighted I am with what he has given us.

Tuesday  24 August Wolves v Southend  Carling Cup 2nd Round  Wolves 2 (Milijaš-pen 26, Stearman 120+3) Southend United 1 (Easton 80)

Just seconds before the end of added time in extra-time, skipper for the night Richard Stearman netted the winner against a brave and unlucky Southend United team.  Moments before Stearman's last gasp effort, it was The Shrimpers that almost progressed to the third round of the Carling Cup but midfielder Josh Simpson spurned a great chance when he shot straight at Wayne Hennessey.  There were ten changes to the team that started against Everton with Danny Batth and Sam Winnall both making their senior debuts. There was also an outing for another of the club's young professionals - Ashley Hemmings.  In the opening minutes Glenn Morris in the Southend goal had to punch clear a long throw from Greg Halford and at the other end George Elokobi headed out a corner from Sofiene Zaaboub.  Southend were awarded a free-kick after Adlene Guediuora's challenge on Anthony Grant who fired over the angle from 30-yards when the kick was played to him.  A Nenad Milijaš free-kick was half cleared to Batth whose overhead kick from the edge of the box went straight into the arms of Morris.   Another free-kick, this time taken by Zaaboub, was laid into the path of Grant whose low shot hit a defender and flew behind for a corner.   Wolves took the lead in the 27th minute after Winnall was tripped in the box by Chris Barker. Milijaš made no mistake from the spot blasting the penalty past Morris.  Southend should have been level four minutes later but Bilel Mohsni headed narrowly wide of the far post from close in after Peter Gilbert had lifted a free-kick into the home area.  Mohsni did have the ball in Hennessey's net in the 35th minute but the flag had been raised for offside.   There was a moment of danger for Wolves when Grant ran from just inside the Wolves half and cut inside before hitting a low drive that was well taken by Hennessey.  There was a brief skirmish after Winnall slid on the keeper who had just clung onto a Dave Edwards header following a Milijaš corner then, just before the half drifted into stoppage time, Simpson burst through the middle and lifted a shot narrowly over the bar.

A neat piece of ball control saw Barry Corr carving out a shooting opportunity for himself but Hennessey had positioned himself perfectly to cut out the drive that followed.  Winnall was shown the yellow card for persistent fouling after he had controlled the ball with his hand before Morris dived to hold on to a low effort from Hemmings.  Only a last ditch tackle from Mohsni prevented an almost certain goal from Guedioura and, on the hour mark, Winnall nearly capped his debut with a stunning goal but his volley just beat the far post after Hemmings had supplied the cross from the right.   Ronald Zubar won the ball in midfield and beat two men on a run to the edge of the Southend box but Morris got behind the French defender's low shot.   Blair Sturrock clipped the top of the bar with the referee ruling that Hennessy had got a touch on the ball and awarding a corner.   With 20 minutes remaining both teams made a double switch with Winnall and Hemmings getting a warm reception from the crowd as they left the field to be replaced by Kevin Doyle and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.   Gilbert then went into the book for a late tackle on Zubar who needed treatment before he was able to resume.   With ten minutes remaining Southend equalised through Craig Easton's diving header after a well delivered cross from Sean Clohessy.  Two minutes later Ebanks-Blake prodded home a low cross from Zubar but he was deemed to be offside.

90 Minutes: Wolves 1 Southend 1

Kevin Foley replaced Edwards at the start of extra-time which was just 20 seconds old when Halford had two attempts at goal with the first being blocked by a defender and the second ending in the arms of Morris.  Easton was yellow carded for pulling back Doyle and then Ebanks-Blake had another 'goal' ruled out for offside after a Milijaš shot was deflected onto the inside of a post by a defender.  Batth scooped the ball over the bar after a Milijaš corner and, after the change round, another great tackle from Mohsni denied Doyle who would otherwise have been clean through. With the game entering it's final moments, Simpson looked on to get the winner as he charged in on substitute Louie Soares's centre but his first time shot whet straight into the midriff of Hennessey.  Then came the last gasp winner as Zubar cut into the United box and drove the ball deep into the six-yard box where it hit a defender before Stearman guided it over the line from a yard out to break Essex hearts.

Saturday 21  August Everton 1 (Cahill 43) Wolves 1 (Sylvan Ebanks-Blake 76)

After being on the wrong end of a first-half battering at Goodison Park, Wolves hit back after the break to level matters through Sylvan Ebanks Blake and take a point for the second successive season from a visit to Everton. George Elokobi and Kevin Doyle came in for the injured Jelle Van Damme and Steven Fletcher in an otherwise unchanged Wanderers team In the first two minutes pushes by Jody Craddock and Christophe Berra resulted in free-kicks both taken by Mikel Arteta. Marcus Hahnemann had no difficulty in collecting the first and the referee ruled the keeper was fouled as he went for the second. Berra was then penalised for a challenge on Jermaine Beckford and again it was Arteta that lifted the free-kick into the area. Beckford headed the ball back to Diniyar Bilyaletdinov who charged in and blasted a shot high over the bar. Wolves' first threat came after Doyle had been fouled by Phil Jagielka to the left of the Everton box but Matt Jarvis's free-kick curled straight into the arms of Tim Howard. Craddock had to nip across smartly to clear as Beckford broke into the right of the visitors area, before Karl Henry was pulled up for a tackle on Steven Pienaar some 25-yards out from Hahnemann's goal. The Wolves skipper argued, with justification, that he had won the ball but justice was done when Leighton Baines was wide with the free-kick. Hahnemann made a fine fingertip save as he turned over a 22-yard drive from John Heitinga and from the resultant corner, taken by Arteta, Tim Cahill headed over the bar. Jarvis was well wide with a shot on the turn from just outside the Everton box, and then the referee appeared to bow to crowd pressure as he booked Elokobi for an innocuous looking challenge on Arteta. Pienaar lifted a drive over the bar after Cahill had played the ball back to him and Bilyaletdinov shot wide as Everton continued to dominate proceedings. Shortly before the break, Stephen Ward fouled Arteta in the box but the referee, who was right up with play, amazingly gave the kick on the 18-yard line. Arteta's free-kick hit the wall and Craddock appeared to be fouled by Cahill as he attempted to clear. As the defender fell to the ground Cahill rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

There was little of note to trouble either keeper in the opening minutes after the break before Mick McCarthy made a change sending Adlene Guedioura on in place of Elokobi. Ward dropped back into defence, Guedioura played on the right of midfield and Jarvis switched to the left. Bilyaletdinov completely missed the ball as he spun onto a centre from Cahill, before some pressure from Wolves earned them a corner which was taken by Jarvis. Craddock ran in at the near post but his flick only found the side netting. A fierce drive from Bilyaletdinov bounced to safety off Craddock and then both Pienaar and Bilyaletdinov needed attention after two challenges in quick succession from Berra - neither of which warranted a free-kick. In the 70th minute Beckford broke from his own half and sprinted into the Wolves box. He was about to pull the trigger what Ward ran across to clear with a timely intervention. Greg Halford replaced Dave Jones and within seconds of his introduction he lifted a long throw into the box. Craddock headed the ball back to Jarvis but his first time shot was way too high. It was thanks to the determination of Guedioura that Wolves drew level in the 74th minute. The Algerian midfielder won the ball from Heitinga and raced into the Everton half before slipping a pass to Doyle on the right. Doyle kept his head as he spotted Ebanks-Blake running in and laid a perfect low cross into his path for the striker to stroke the ball home. Halford sent a volley over the far angle and then he was booked for a late challenge on Baines just outside the Wolves area. The game reached a frenetic climax with Howard saving a curling effort from Ebanks-Blake before Everton substitute Louis Saha headed onto the roof of Hahnemann's net after a cross from Leon Osman. A fine piece of skill from Jarvis saw the winger jink his way to the by-line but his low cross was cut out by Sylvain Distin and then Jarvis went close to snatching all three points with stoppage time cross-shot.

Saturday  14 August Wolves 2 (D Jones 36, Fletcher 38) Stoke City (Faye 55) 3pm ko

Wolves opened the new campaign with a hard fought but deserved victory over Stoke City. It was the first time since 1999 that a Molineux side had won a first game of the season. Steven Fletcher and Jelle Van Damme both made their full debuts as Stoke kicked-off attacking the North Bank end. And inside the first 30 seconds Marcus Hahnemann had to dive at Ricardo Fuller's feet as he cut out Matthew Etherington's low cross. City were making all of the early running and in the third minute Kenwyne Jones held off Christophe Berra's challenge as he cut in from the right before hitting a shot that bounced off the face off the crossbar. When Wolves did get forward for the first time, Fletcher was penalised for pulling at Abdoulaye Faye as the pair ran into the Stoke box. Wolves were reduced to ten men for a few minutes whilst Van Damme received treatment to a cut head. In his absence Rory Delap took the first of his notorious long throws of the afternoon but Fletcher had dropped back to head clear. After eight minutes Dave Jones drove a low shot into the City net but the referee blew for a foul on the keeper to silence the cheers of the South Bank. Kenwyne Jones was hurt following a challenge by Jody Craddock. There was no foul but City's new signing was in obvious distress and his debut came to an end after just 14 minutes with Mamady Sidibe deputising. A clever flick by Fletcher found Sylvan Ebanks-Blake who spread a pass to Van Damme on the left. Fletcher ran in to meet the cross that followed but he hooked the ball high over the bar with a first time effort. Seconds later the Scot needed treatment following a challenge by Faye. Thomas Sorensen had to punch clear a well delivered cross from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and then Berra headed well wide from a Matt Jarvis centre. Jarvis pumped a cross over to Fletcher whose pass to Ebanks-Blake hit the arm of Ryan Shawcross. Appeals for hands were waved away by the referee but the danger wasn't over for the visiting defence as first Ebanks-Blake and then Fletcher had shots blocked. The ball then rolled into the path of Jones who failed to make proper contact allowing the defence to clear. Dean Whitehead's clumsy challenge on Kevin Foley a foot outside the Stoke box led to Wolves taking a 36th minute lead. Karl Henry, with is back to goal, rolled the ball to Jones who flicked it into the air and volleyed into the net via the underside of the bar. It was a spectacular effort (pictured). Just two minutes later Fletcher doubled the score with his first goal for the club as he headed in from point blank range. Jarvis crossed to Berra who had Faye at his back. But the Wolves defender managed to turn and hoist a short cross that took a deflection before Fletcher got in front of Danny Higginbotham to find the net In first-half stoppage time Robert Huth blocked a low shot from the lively Jarvis.

Fletcher was a yard too high with a long range shot shortly before he departed from the field, obviously feeling the effects of some earlier challenges, to be replaced by Andy Keogh. Shortly afterwards it was substitute for substitute for Stoke as Tuncay was sent on in place of Sidibe. Craddock headed behind a Delap long throw and it led to The Potters pulling a goal back in the 55th minute. Etherington fired in the corner and Faye ran in to power a header into the net. Shawcross saw his header plucked out of the air by Hahnemann after another Delap missile, then Glenn Whelan's shot took a huge deflection off Craddock and ran uncomfortably close to the postwith the American keeper flatfooted. Huth's attempted clearance of a low cross from Jarvis saw the ball going straight up in the air. Sorensen managed to punch clear but when Jarvis regained possession he sprinted into the box and unleashed a cross-shot that wasn't too far over the far angle. By this time torrential rain was falling accompanied by thunder and lightning. Huth was penalised for a high kick when challenging Van Damme to the left of the City box but Jarvis's free-kick was headed out. After George Elokobi had come on for Van Damme, it was Jarvis who supplied the cross for Stephen Ward to thump a volley into the floor forcing a terrific reflex save from Sorensen who somehow managed to touch the bouncing ball onto the bar. Two Stoke bookings followed in a two minute spell - Huth for a heavy challenge on Ward and Whitehead for felling Jarvis. Eight minutes from time Berra headed the ball back towards his own area and Craddock slipped as he tried to help it on its way. Tuncay nipped in and he slid into Hahnemann after the keeper had collected the ball. It could have provoked an ugly melee between players of the opposing sides but Hahnemann was quickly on his feet to give a friendly hug to the Turkish striker and take the heat out of the situation. In the final minute Jones almost got his second of the afternoon after cutting into the right of the Stoke area and hitting an angled drive that just beat the far post.
